VIDEO: I Started Zenith Bank with ₦20m in 1990 — Jim Ovia
Founder and Chairman of Zenith Bank Plc, Jim Ovia, has revealed that he started the financial institution with just ₦20 million in 1990, recounting the bank’s humble beginnings and remarkable growth over the years.
Ovia made the disclosure in a video that has since gained traction online, where he shared insights into his entrepreneurial journey and the vision that gave birth to one of Nigeria’s leading banks. According to him, Zenith Bank was founded on strong values, discipline and a commitment to excellence, despite the limited capital at the time.
Reflecting on the early days, Ovia said the journey was filled with challenges, but a clear strategy, integrity and focus helped the bank survive and expand in a competitive financial environment.
“We started Zenith Bank with ₦20 million in 1990. What mattered most was not the amount of money but the vision, the people and the systems we put in place,” he said.
The billionaire banker noted that Zenith Bank’s success story underscores the importance of innovation, good corporate governance and long-term planning. Today, the bank operates across Africa and beyond, with a strong presence in major global financial centres.
Ovia also used the opportunity to advise young Nigerian entrepreneurs, urging them not to be discouraged by limited resources or difficult economic conditions.
“Start small, think big, and remain consistent. Challenges will come, but perseverance and integrity will take you far,” he advised.
Zenith Bank is currently one of Nigeria’s most capitalised banks and a major player in the African banking industry, with numerous local and international awards to its name.
