US Election: NATO Secretary-General Congratulates Trump, Hails Strengthening Of Alliance

2 min read

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte has extended his congratulations to Donald Trump following his projected victory in the 2024 US presidential election.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Rutte emphasized that Trump’s return to the White House would be crucial for maintaining the strength of the NATO alliance in the face of increasing global challenges.

Trump, alongside his vice-presidential running mate JD Vance, is expected to be formally declared the winner after securing the necessary 270 electoral votes to clinch victory.

Rutte praised Trump for his leadership during his first term, highlighting his contributions to bolstering European defense spending and enhancing transatlantic cooperation.

“I congratulate Donald Trump on his election as President of the United States. I look forward to working with him again to advance peace through strength via NATO,” Rutte stated.

The NATO Secretary-General further noted that, under Trump’s leadership, NATO Allies had made significant progress in defense spending, with two-thirds of member nations now meeting the benchmark of spending at least 2% of their GDP on defense.

Rutte described this as a positive trajectory, essential for ensuring the continued protection of the alliance’s collective security.

“Our 31 allies are vital in advancing US interests, multiplying American power, and keeping Americans safe,” Rutte added. “Together, NATO Allies represent half of the world’s economic might and military power. We face numerous challenges globally, including a more aggressive Russia, the rise of terrorism, and strategic competition from China, North Korea, and Iran.”

As NATO prepares to navigate these complex threats, Rutte emphasized the importance of maintaining a united front. “With President-elect Trump’s return to office, I am confident that NATO will be stronger, larger, and more united in its efforts to preserve peace and prosperity across North America and Europe,” he added.
