UCL Round Up: Tottenham Beat Man City While Liverpool Down Porto
2 min readUefa Champions League tuesday fixtures will see Tottenham take a slender one-goal advantage into the second-leg of their Champions League quarter-final at the Etihad next week after Son Heung-Min’s late goal gave Spurs a deserved victory against Manchester City.
The South Korean struck ten minutes from time to break the deadlock in north London after being pushed into a more advanced position due to the injury sustained by Harry Kane midway through the second half.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side raced out of the blocks but they had Hugo Lloris to thank for keeping the score level when he saved a dubiously-awarded penalty from Sergio Aguero after just ten minutes. It was City’s only chance of note during a pulsating opening 45 minutes in which Spurs dominated but failed to break the deadlock.
Pep Guardiola’s side regained the composure during the interval and looked to be taking a goalless draw back to Manchester but Son scored ten minutes from time to give Spurs the advantage.
Meanwhile, at Anfield, Naby Keita and Roberto Firmino struck inside the first 26 minutes to put the hosts in command and Liverpool’s only regret may be not building a more emphatic lead to take to northern Portugal for next week’s second leg.
However, a fourth clean sheet in five home Champions League games this season means an away goal at the Estadio do Dragao on April 17th will leave Porto needing four to progress.
Liverpool thrashed the Portuguese giants 5-0 in the first leg of their last-16 tie last season and the scoreline could have been just as embarrassing for Sergio Conceicao’s men had the hosts been more accurate in front of goal.
It took Jurgen Klopp’s men just five minutes to open the scoring as Keita got his second goal in as many games having waited nine months to open his Liverpool account.
The Guinean got the benefit of a big deflection off Oliver Torres as his strike from the edge of the area left veteran goalkeeper Iker Casillas helpless.
Minutes later Firmino was galloping into acres of space in behind the Porto defence, but this time his deflected effort drifted just beyond Casillas’s far post. Roberto Firmino then tapped home the second from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross after Jordan Henderson’s fine ball from midfield.
