Tinubu’s 2027 Re-Election Bid Threatened as Obasanjo, IBB, Abdulsalami, Others Consult
2 min readA group of retired generals, including Olusegun Obasanjo, Ibrahim Babangida, and Abdulsalam Abubakar, have initiated a move to install former Senate President David Mark as the new chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
This development is aimed at strengthening the party’s structures and positioning it for a stronger challenge to President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
“The Generals are worried about the way and manner the affairs of the PDP were being run, and they decided to come together to chart a way forward for the party,” a source close to the development revealed.

The retired generals, who are reportedly dissatisfied with Tinubu’s leadership style, have also begun exploring options for a credible presidential candidate to fly the PDP flag in the next election.
Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi are said to be top contenders for the party’s ticket.
“Everybody is crying about this hardship, and it seems to be getting out of control. People cannot afford three square meals. The issue of transportation, the hike in fuel, the hike in school fees for the children, and the lack of funds in everybody’s pocket is making life difficult for everybody,” Abdulsalam Abubakar lamented.
This move is seen as a strategic effort to rescue the PDP from imminent collapse and prevent Nigeria from becoming a one-party state.
The trio of Obasanjo, Babangida, and Abdulsalam, who played a key role in the formation of the PDP in 1998, are now seeking to reposition the party for a stronger political relevance in the future.
“During the last protest, we saw unnecessary, uncalled-for carnage, theft, and criminalities. Instead of protesting, the people went about looting even private houses; private individuals suffered in the hands of the demonstrators,” Abubakar recalled.
According to sources close to the development, David Mark, who is currently on vacation in the United States, was initially reluctant to accept the challenge of leading the PDP out of its current woes.
However, he eventually yielded to the persuasion of General Babangida, his long-time mentor and benefactor.
“The Generals at the Minna meeting want Mr. Mark to be at the helm of affairs of the PDP while they shop for the right presidential candidate that would defeat Tinubu hands down in 2027,” the source stressed.
The PDP has been facing internal crisis and power struggles, which have weakened its ability to provide a robust opposition to the ruling party.
