Tinubu Seeks Senate Approval For Oluyede As New COAS
2 min readPresident Bola Tinubu has formally requested the Nigerian Senate to confirm Lieutenant General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede as the substantive Chief of Army Staff (COAS).
This comes after the unfortunate death of the former COAS, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, who passed away on November 5 following an illness.
In a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President’s request aligns with the provisions of Section 218(2) of the 1999 Constitution and Section 18(1) of the Armed Forces Act.

Tinubu expressed confidence in Oluyede’s leadership and professional integrity, stressing that the general possesses the experience needed to lead the Nigerian Army and ensure national security and stability.
Oluyede, who was appointed as the Acting Chief of Army Staff on October 30, 2024, following Lagbaja’s illness, has a distinguished military career spanning over three decades.
A member of the 39th Regular Course, he previously served as the 56th Commander of the prestigious Infantry Corps of the Nigerian Army, based in Jaji, Kaduna.
The general’s career is marked by significant operational involvement in key missions such as the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) in Liberia, Operation HARMONY IV in Bakassi, and Operation HADIN KAI in the North East, where he commanded the 27 Task Force Brigade.
Oluyede’s meritorious service has earned him numerous awards, including the Corps Medal of Honour, the Grand Service Star, the Field Command Medal of Honour, and the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Award.
His appointment as the substantive COAS is now pending Senate confirmation, with his leadership abilities hailed as vital for advancing the army’s mission of national security.
