Tinubu: Argungu Festival’s Return Reflects Renewed Stability in Nigeria
Argungu, Kebbi State — President Bola Tinubu has said the revival of the Argungu International Fishing and Cultural Festival after a six-year hiatus signals improving stability and a return to normalcy in Nigeria, particularly in Kebbi State.
Speaking as the special guest of honour at the grand finale of the 61st edition of the historic festival, Tinubu described the event as a strong testament to national unity and resilience. He characterised the celebration — which has endured for more than eight decades — as a “powerful symbol of unity, resilience, and peaceful coexistence” among Nigerians and visiting participants from neighbouring countries.
The president noted that the festival’s successful comeback highlights the progress made in restoring security and fostering social harmony, especially in communities where cultural activities had previously been disrupted.
The four-day event drew significant participation, with organisers reporting the attendance of over 50,000 fishermen, alongside thousands of spectators, tourists, and cultural enthusiasts. The festival featured its signature mass fishing competition, as well as traditional music, dance, and exhibitions reflecting the rich heritage of the region.
Local officials and community leaders welcomed the festival’s return, emphasising its economic and social importance. Beyond its cultural significance, the gathering is widely recognised for stimulating local commerce, tourism, and hospitality businesses.
The Argungu International Fishing and Cultural Festival remains one of Nigeria’s most iconic cultural showcases, historically attracting both domestic and international attention. Observers say its revival carries symbolic weight, reflecting broader efforts to promote peace, cultural preservation, and economic activity in northern Nigeria.
Festivities concluded amid celebrations and renewed optimism among residents, with stakeholders expressing hopes for sustained continuity of the event in the years ahead.
