Taxing Poverty Won’t Bring Prosperity, Says Peter Obi

Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has criticised Nigeria’s tax policies, warning that taxing the poor will not lead to economic prosperity.

Obi made the remarks while speaking on the country’s economic direction, stressing that sustainable growth can only be achieved through productive investments and the empowerment of small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) rather than increasing the tax burden on struggling citizens.

According to him, governments should focus on creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive, generate employment and boost productivity, instead of imposing multiple taxes on low-income earners.

“Prosperity does not come from taxing poverty. It comes from production, value creation and empowering small businesses to grow,” Obi said.

The former Anambra State governor noted that Nigeria’s high poverty rate and unemployment levels require policies that stimulate industrial growth, support entrepreneurship and encourage local manufacturing.

He also called on policymakers to prioritize education, healthcare and infrastructure, describing them as critical sectors that drive long-term economic development.

Obi’s comments come amid ongoing debates over tax reforms and revenue generation by the Federal Government, with many Nigerians expressing concerns over rising living costs and economic hardship.

His remarks have since sparked reactions across political and economic circles, with supporters praising his stance as people-centered and economically pragmatic.
