Russia Denies Trump Call, Says West Unwilling To Negotiate On Ukraine

2 min read

Russia has flatly denied a report claiming that US President-elect Donald Trump recently spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the report as “false” on Monday, following claims by The Washington Post that Trump had urged Putin to de-escalate the conflict during a phone call last Thursday.

Trump’s potential influence over the war has raised significant attention, as his election promises to seek a resolution to the Ukraine crisis could dramatically alter the West’s strategy.

However, Peskov emphasized that Moscow has not received any indication from the West that it is ready for serious negotiations. “We have not received any signals,” he said, reiterating that Russia continues its “special operation” in Ukraine until all its objectives are achieved.

A senior Ukrainian official also dismissed the report, stating that Kyiv had not been informed of any communication between the two leaders. Trump, during his campaign, had suggested that he could end the war quickly, emphasizing direct talks with Putin. However, Trump has yet to provide a clear strategy or detailed terms for peace.

Meanwhile, Peskov acknowledged that European leaders are increasingly apprehensive about Trump’s presidency.

“We see a certain nervousness and various fears among Europeans,” he said, adding that despite Trump’s rhetoric about peace, no concrete discussions with Western leaders, including German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, are currently underway. Peskov stated that Putin remains open to dialogue but reiterated that no preparations for talks have been made.

In response to the Washington Post report, which suggested Trump had reminded Putin of Washington’s military presence in Europe, Peskov maintained that the West, particularly European nations, continues to pursue a “strategic defeat” of Russia.

He also commented on the ongoing military situation in Ukraine, where Russian forces are making significant territorial gains in the eastern Donetsk region.
