Reps Deputy Spokesman Champions Tinubu’s Tax Reforms, Calls For Nationwide Support

2 min read

The Deputy Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Mr. Philip Agbese, has voiced his strong support for President Bola Tinubu’s proposed Tax Reform Bills, currently under consideration in the National Assembly.

Agbese, a known ally of the President, emphasized that the bills are crucial for stimulating Nigeria’s economy and creating a transparent tax administration system that eliminates the issue of multiple taxation.

The proposed reform includes four major bills: the Nigeria Tax Bill 2024, the Tax Administration Bill, the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill.

These bills aim to streamline Nigeria’s tax framework, reduce legal disputes, and tackle loopholes exploited by businesses to evade taxes.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Monday, Agbese made it clear that he is fully committed to driving legislative support for the reforms, which he believes are essential for both the federal and state governments.

“I am one of the strongest advocates of President Tinubu’s tax bills because I am a reformer and believe in changes that will benefit the country. I have studied the document and am convinced beyond doubt that it will help to improve the nation’s economy,” he said.

Agbese noted that the reforms would not only benefit his home state of Benue, but would have a positive impact on all taxpayers across the country.

He urged his colleagues in the House of Representatives to rally behind the bills, stressing that transparent tax policies would increase public trust and demand accountability from government institutions.

He further appealed to the 36 state governors to support the reforms despite opposition from some quarters. “Everyone talks about nations that provide social services to their citizens.

Those citizens pay their taxes promptly. The truth is, in recent years, many Nigerians have raised concerns about multiple taxation, and these proposed reforms aim to address that,” Agbese said.

The bills have drawn criticism from some state governors, who have called for a delay to allow for more consultations. However, President Tinubu has rejected these calls, insisting that the reforms are crucial for addressing Nigeria’s fiscal challenges.
