Protest rocks Delta as commercial tricycle operators reject sticker price increment

Commercial tricycle operators in Warri, Delta State have rejected the increment in the price of sticker being sold by alleged hoodlums masquerading as Government Officials.

 

While the protest lasted, the flow of movement of people was obstructed by the tricycle operators who refused to work or convey passengers to their destinations.

 

Many people had no option than to trek long distances.

 

The protesters who displayed placards said, “We nor go gree. Agbero pack your load and go”,”Oborevwori, call your people to order. We cannot pay #12,000 for tickect we buy $3,000″,”Oborevwori tell your people to stop adding to our pains on the roads”, “Touts, stop extorting us” etc.

 

They blocked major roads within Warri and its environ as they chanted solidarity songs.

 

They urged Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to intervene and save the situation from degenerating into a crisis.

 

One of the tricycle operators identified as Efevogho who spoke to SOCIETY WATCH alongside Okumagba Avenue said touts are now forcing them to buy a ticket they used to buy for three thousand(#3,000) for twelve thousand(#12,000) naira.

 

He said this is the reason why they’re kicking against it. According to him,”How much do we make on this road daily?

 

Another commercial tricycle operator, Eguonoghene said Governor Sheriff needs to intervene in the matter to save the situation and cushion the pains they go through in the hands of the touts.

 

Meanwhile, a group, Initiative For Social Rights Concerns And Advancement ISRCA, in a statement, urged Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to urgently address the issue that led to protest in some areas of the state.

 

The group noted that the tricycle operators are resisting the increment of the sticker price by its union, which allegedly skyrocketed from ₦3,000 to ₦12,000.

 

ISRCA National Coordinator,Comrade (Amb) Derrick Oritsematosan Agberen said,”Considering the level of hardship resulting from economic challenges and poor policy implementation by the government, Nigerians now face numerous difficulties due to the impact on prices of goods and commodities in the markets.
