Police Nab 43 in Delta for Disrupting New Year Crossover Celebrations
The Delta State Police Command has arrested 43 suspects for allegedly disrupting New Year’s Eve crossover celebrations in parts of the state, particularly in Asaba, the state capital.
The arrests were made during a coordinated security operation carried out by operatives of the command to ensure public safety and prevent criminal activities as residents ushered in the New Year.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, the suspects were apprehended for various offences, including public disturbance, illegal possession of hard drugs, reckless driving, and unlawful use of fireworks.
Items recovered during the operation include vehicles, motorcycles, illicit drugs, fireworks, and other dangerous objects suspected to have been used to cause unrest during the celebrations.
The police spokesperson stated that the operation was part of proactive measures to maintain law and order and prevent criminal elements from hijacking the festive period to carry out unlawful acts.
“The Command remains committed to ensuring the safety of lives and property. Anyone found disturbing public peace or engaging in criminal activities will be dealt with in accordance with the law,” the statement said.
Residents of Asaba commended the police for their swift intervention, noting that the timely action helped prevent what could have escalated into widespread disorder.
The suspects, according to the police, will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The Delta State Police Command also urged members of the public to remain law-abiding and cooperate with security agencies as efforts continue to maintain peace and security across the state.
