Oshiomhole Opposed Son’s Nomination As Health Commissioner, Says Edo Deputy Gov

The Edo State Deputy Governor, Dennis Idahosa, has revealed that former Governor Adams Oshiomhole opposed the appointment of his son, Cyril Adams Oshiomhole, as the state’s Commissioner for Health-designate.

This revelation came in an interview with Channels Television on Wednesday, following the recent announcement of Cyril’s nomination by Governor Monday Okpebholo.

Idahosa defended the appointment, emphasizing that Cyril, a seasoned medical doctor with training both in Nigeria and the United States, was fully qualified for the role.

“Cyril is a seasoned medical doctor. He is fully qualified to be in the cabinet. The fact that he is Oshiomhole’s son does not disqualify him from holding a position he is competent to manage,” Idahosa stated.

The deputy governor also sought to dispel accusations of nepotism, explaining that Oshiomhole, despite being Cyril’s father, opposed the nomination, citing the governor’s vision for the state.

“Adams opposed it. He was against the nomination because of the vision the governor has for the people of Edo State. The governor made the decision based on competence, not because of his father,” Idahosa added.

In response to concerns about state capture, particularly after remarks by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Idahosa reiterated that the appointment was about merit and competency, not family influence.

“What is happening in Edo State is far from state capture. It is about ensuring competence and delivering results for the people,” he added.

Idahosa also clarified his role as deputy governor, stating that while he discusses cabinet matters with the governor, his primary responsibility is overseeing the state’s boundary commission.
