Oluwo Suggests Nigerians May Seek Constitutional Review for Tinubu to Stay Beyond Two Terms

The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, has suggested that many Nigerians may in the future call for a constitutional review that would allow President Bola Tinubu to remain in office beyond the constitutionally permitted two terms.

Oba Akanbi made the remark while commenting on President Tinubu’s leadership and the reforms being implemented by his administration. According to the traditional ruler, the president has demonstrated strong leadership by taking bold decisions aimed at addressing long-standing economic and governance challenges.

The monarch noted that effective leadership requires the ability to make difficult decisions and stand firmly by them, even when such decisions generate public criticism.

He also observed that several past leaders had attempted to introduce reforms to improve Nigeria’s economy but were often forced to abandon them due to public pressure and resistance.

According to him, President Tinubu has shown uncommon courage by pursuing reforms despite opposition, a move he believes could eventually win broader support among Nigerians.

Oba Akanbi added that if the reforms succeed in improving the country’s economic fortunes, citizens might begin to demand constitutional changes that would allow the president to remain in office beyond the current two-term limit.

Nigeria’s constitution currently limits the president to two four-year terms in office. Discussions about potential constitutional amendments have historically generated significant public debate, with many Nigerians emphasizing the importance of preserving democratic safeguards and term limits.

Political analysts say comments suggesting a possible extension of presidential tenure are likely to spark conversations across the country about constitutional reforms, governance, and the future of Nigeria’s democracy.
