The Nigeria Education Loan Fund has expanded access to the Federal Government’s student loan scheme, providing more students with access to affordable education.

Speaking at a sensitization meeting with students at Ebonyi State University, the Managing Director of NELFund, Dr. Akintunde Sawyyer, assured students that they would not face harassment when repaying their loans after graduation.

“You will start loan repayment two years after graduation and completion of NYSC. Please note that you cannot be reached for repayment if you are not working yet. Don’t deny yourself the opportunity to get an education because of funds. Take advantage of this great opportunity to acquire education without stress,” Dr. Sawyyer said.

He emphasized that the loan scheme is interest-free and repayment only begins two years after completing the National Youth Service Corps, provided the student is employed.

The National Association of Nigerian Students President, Comrade Lucky Emonefe, urged students to embrace the loan scheme, dispelling misconceptions that it was only for a select few.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement, Mrs. Chioma Nweze, highlighted the need for increased interest in the loan program within the South East region, emphasizing that the loan is available to all Nigerian students, regardless of background.

Ebonyi State University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Chigozie Ogbu, commended NELFund for organizing the sensitization session and acknowledged the challenges encountered by some students during the application process, urging NELFund to address these issues for a smoother experience.
