Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know Tuesday morning

1. The Independent National Electoral Commission on Monday received the petition seeking the recall process of suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central). The petition was submitted on Monday and received by the commission’s secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony.

 

2. Suspended Rivers Governor, Siminalayi Fubara has warned against linking him to any militant group. The governor, in a statement by his chief press secretary (CPS), Nelson Chukwudi, said persons circulating fake videos of pipeline attack were trying hard to connect them to his supporters.

 

3. The National Identity Management Commission(NIMC) has warned against indiscriminate printing of the National Identity Numbers. NIMC, however, said in a statement by its Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, that it has finalised plans to launch Improved General Multi-Purpose Card, which is multifunctional and serves as a physical means of identification and payment.

 

4. No fewer than 133 suspects were arrested on Monday by the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, who busted a Ponzi Scheme Academy located in the Gwagwalada area of the nation’s capital. According to the anti-graft agency, the academy, identified as Q University also known as Q-Net is in the business of recruiting “gullible young Nigerians” who would be trained for the scheme.

 

5. Twelve inmates at Koton Karfe Medium security prison yesterday overpowered officers on duty, killed one of them, tied up two others and escaped. Witnesses said the inmates tied the officers together and strangulated one of them.

 

8. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has declared that democracy in Africa is failing because it does not reflect the continent’s culture. Similarly, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, said Nigeria’s democracy has completely collapsed due to what he called the actions of the country’s current leaders.

 

7. The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has intercepted a shipment of 488 live rounds of illegal ammunition concealed inside palm oil jerrycans at an Abuja bus terminal. Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, DCP Ishaku Sharu, disclosed this development while parading the suspect at the police command headquarters in Abuja on Monday evening.

 

8. Presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP) in 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has said Nigeria’s democracy has collapsed due to the antics of the present crops of leaders manning the country. He said this at the 60th birthday celebration and colloquium in honour of Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and former governor of Imo State.

 

9. Gunmen on Sunday ambushed some residents in the Dudun community, Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, and killed three people. The National Publicity Secretary of the Irigwe Youth Movement, Joseph Chudu Yonkpa, confirmed the killings to reporters in Jos on Monday revealing that those killed were Mr. John Avia, 48; Sunday Vickson, 32; and Peter Vickson, 30.

 

10. Suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, has denied reports that she apologised to the Senate over the issue that led to her suspension. Akpoti-Uduaghan in a statement on Monday, described the claims as “false and misleading,” insisting that she still stands by her position.
