Nigerian Man Bags 19-Year Jail Term in US for $4m Romance Scam

A Nigerian national has been sentenced to 19 years in a United States federal prison for his role in a multimillion-dollar romance scam and business email compromise (BEC) scheme that defrauded victims of more than $4 million.

According to U.S. authorities, the convict was found guilty of participating in an international fraud network that targeted victims through online dating platforms and deceptive email communications. Prosecutors said the syndicate manipulated victims into transferring large sums of money under false pretences, often exploiting emotional relationships built over time.

Investigators revealed that the scheme involved impersonation tactics, fake business transactions and coordinated financial transfers designed to conceal the origin of stolen funds. The illicit proceeds were reportedly laundered through multiple bank accounts across different countries.

The U.S. Department of Justice stated that the lengthy prison sentence reflects the seriousness of cyber-enabled financial crimes and the significant emotional and financial harm inflicted on victims.

Officials also noted that the case resulted from collaboration between U.S. law enforcement agencies and international partners working to combat transnational cybercrime.

Authorities warned the public to remain cautious when engaging in online relationships or financial transactions with individuals they have not met in person, stressing that romance scams remain one of the fastest-growing forms of internet fraud globally.
