NDLEA Nabs 65-Year-Old Grandmother, Intercepts Illicit Drugs Hidden in Coffee Sachets

Abuja, Nigeria — Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a 65-year-old grandmother and intercepted consignments of illicit drugs concealed in coffee sachets and other deceptive packaging in a series of operations carried out across the country.

The agency said the suspect was apprehended during an intelligence-led operation, where officers uncovered drugs carefully hidden to evade detection. Items seized during the raids included cocaine, ketamine and other prohibited substances, packaged in sachets resembling popular coffee brands and everyday household products.

According to the NDLEA, the method highlights the evolving tactics of drug traffickers who increasingly exploit unsuspecting couriers and elderly persons, as well as creative concealment techniques, to move narcotics within and outside Nigeria.

NDLEA officials said the arrest of the elderly woman underscores the agency’s resolve to dismantle drug networks regardless of age, gender or status, noting that investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the syndicate.

“The concealment of hard drugs in common consumer items such as coffee sachets is a disturbing trend. Our officers remain vigilant and committed to staying ahead of traffickers,” the agency said in a statement.

The NDLEA added that the nationwide operations also led to multiple seizures and arrests in different states, as part of intensified efforts to curb drug abuse and trafficking.

The suspect and seized exhibits have been taken into custody for further investigation and prosecution in line with Nigerian drug laws.
