NAFDAC Resumes Enforcement of Sachet Alcohol Ban, Dismisses Shutdown Claims

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has announced the resumption of full enforcement of the ban on alcoholic beverages sold in sachets and small bottles below 200ml, reaffirming its commitment to public health and youth protection.

In a statement released on Monday, the agency dismissed claims circulating in some quarters that the renewed enforcement would lead to the shutdown of factories or massive job losses within the alcohol beverage industry. NAFDAC clarified that the policy is not new, noting that stakeholders had been given ample notice and engagement since the regulation was first introduced.

According to the agency, the ban is aimed at curbing underage drinking, reducing alcohol abuse, and addressing growing public health concerns linked to the easy accessibility of cheap, high-alcohol products, particularly among young people.

NAFDAC emphasized that manufacturers were previously directed to halt the production and distribution of alcohol in sachets and small containers, while distributors and retailers were advised to clear existing stock within an agreed transition period. The current phase, the agency said, is strictly enforcement.

“The objective is not to cripple businesses but to safeguard public health,” NAFDAC stated, adding that companies are encouraged to focus on producing alcohol in approved container sizes that comply with existing regulations.

The agency also warned that defaulters will face sanctions, including product seizure and possible prosecution, as enforcement teams have been deployed nationwide.

Public health advocates have largely welcomed the move, describing it as a necessary step toward reducing alcohol-related harm. However, some industry operators continue to call for further dialogue, citing economic concerns.

NAFDAC reiterated its openness to engagement but maintained that the protection of public health remains non-negotiable, urging Nigerians to support the initiative in the interest of national well-being.
