MMF Announces Plans to Mark 50th Anniversary of Murtala Muhammed’s Assassination
The Murtala Muhammed Foundation (MMF) has announced plans to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the assassination of former Nigerian Head of State, General Murtala Ramat Muhammed (GCFR), with a series of national and international activities scheduled for February 2026.
In a statement released by the Foundation, the golden jubilee commemoration is described as a moment of deep national reflection on the life, leadership, and enduring legacy of General Muhammed, whose short but impactful tenure continues to shape Nigeria’s political and moral consciousness.
MMF noted that General Muhammed’s administration, though brief, was transformative, redefining governance standards, restoring discipline and professionalism in the civil service, and repositioning Nigeria as a principled and influential voice in African and global affairs. His firm commitment to unity, social justice, and Pan-Africanism, the Foundation said, remains relevant to Nigeria’s contemporary challenges.
According to the Foundation, the commemorative programme will feature lectures, policy dialogues, memorial events, exhibitions, and international engagements aimed at celebrating General Muhammed’s ideals while inspiring a new generation of Nigerians to embrace ethical leadership and public service.
MMF emphasized that the anniversary will not only honour the late leader’s memory but also serve as a platform to reflect on nation-building, leadership accountability, and the values of courage and selflessness that defined his rule.
General Murtala Muhammed was assassinated on February 13, 1976, in a failed coup attempt, barely six months after assuming office. Fifty years on, the Foundation says his legacy remains a benchmark for purposeful leadership and national service.
