Enugu State was thrown into shock when a man, Sunday Echeji allegedly severed his wife’s hand.
The incident, occurred in Ugwuogede village, Ibagwa-Agu, Nsukka Local Government Area of the state.
Echeji was dragged before Chief Magistrate Court 1 in Enugu on Friday, facing charges of attempted murder under Section 275, Subsection A of the Criminal Code CAP 30, Vol. 1 Revised Laws of Enugu State, 2024.
The severity of the allegations prompted swift action from local authorities, who transferred the case to the State Department of Public Prosecution due to jurisdictional constraints.

In a statement issued on Saturday by the office of the First Lady of Enugu State, the community’s shock and outrage were palpable.
Calls for justice echoed through the halls of justice as the accused was remanded in custody at the Enugu State correctional centre pending his appearance before the State High Court.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, a resident of Ugwuogede village expressed disbelief at the gruesome nature of the incident.
“We never expected such a heinous act in our peaceful community. It’s a tragic reminder of the need for stricter enforcement of laws protecting women from domestic violence,” the resident lamented.
The victim, whose identity has been withheld for privacy reasons, is reportedly receiving medical treatment at an undisclosed facility in the state capital.
Local authorities have assured the public that every effort is being made to support her recovery and ensure justice is served swiftly.
Meanwhile, stakeholders in Enugu State have called for heightened awareness campaigns on domestic violence prevention and support for victims.
