LAWMA Begins Payment Verification Drive to Tackle Illegal Waste Disposal
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has commenced a statewide compliance exercise requiring residents and businesses to provide proof of payment for waste disposal services.
Officials say the initiative is designed to combat illegal dumping and improve environmental sanitation across Lagos. Under the new enforcement measures, property occupants may be asked to present valid evidence of their waste management subscriptions during inspections.
LAWMA explained that the checks form part of broader efforts to strengthen accountability within the state’s waste management system. Authorities argue that ensuring consistent payment for disposal services is critical to maintaining efficient collection operations and preventing indiscriminate refuse disposal.
The agency also warned that failure to comply could attract penalties in line with existing environmental regulations. Residents have been encouraged to regularize their waste disposal arrangements with approved service providers.
The development highlights the state government’s renewed focus on sanitation and urban cleanliness, as Lagos continues to grapple with challenges associated with population growth and waste generation.
