Last PDP Lawmaker Defects in Gombe, Yahaya Hails Move as ‘Vote of Confidence’
The last remaining lawmaker of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Gombe State, Yakubu Daniel, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a significant political shift in the state.
The defection effectively leaves the PDP without representation in the state’s legislative assembly, further strengthening the dominance of the ruling APC.
Governor Inuwa Yahaya welcomed the move, describing it as a strong vote of confidence in his administration and its development agenda.
According to the governor, the decision by the lawmaker reflects growing support for the policies and programmes of the state government.
Yakubu Daniel, while announcing his defection, cited the need to align with the ruling party in order to better serve his constituents and attract more development to his constituency.
He also expressed appreciation to his former party but noted that the changing political dynamics influenced his decision.
Political observers say the development could reshape the state’s political landscape, consolidating the APC’s influence while raising concerns about the absence of opposition representation in the legislature.
Analysts further note that such defections may impact political competition and democratic balance, particularly ahead of future elections in the state.
