Lagos Records No Casualties as Classroom Block Collapses, Orders Relocation of Students
LAGOS, Nigeria — The Lagos State Government has confirmed that no casualties were recorded following the collapse of a classroom block at Odokekere High School, Ikorodu, ordering the immediate relocation of students to ensure safety and uninterrupted learning.
Officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure who visited the scene said the incident occurred during school hours but students and staff were not inside the affected block at the time of the collapse. As a result, no injuries or fatalities were reported.
In a statement, the state government said affected students would be temporarily relocated to nearby public schools within the Ikorodu axis while structural assessments and necessary remedial works are carried out. Authorities added that arrangements have been made to ensure academic activities continue without disruption.
The government attributed the collapse to structural failure, possibly worsened by aging infrastructure and environmental factors, noting that a comprehensive integrity test would be conducted on other buildings within the school premises to prevent a recurrence.
Reaffirming its commitment to student safety, the Lagos State Government warned contractors and school administrators against neglecting building maintenance, stressing that sanctions would be applied where negligence is established.
Parents and residents of the community were urged to remain calm, as the state assured that student welfare remains a top priority and that measures are being taken to upgrade school infrastructure across Lagos.
