Lagos Council Declares Seven-Day Mourning for Late Badagry Monarch

The Badagry Local Government in Lagos State has declared a seven-day mourning period following the death of the Akran of Badagry, Aholu Menu Toyi I, who passed away after a long and impactful reign.

The council announced that the mourning period is to honour the late monarch’s contributions to the cultural heritage, peace, and development of Badagry and its environs. During the period, flags are expected to fly at half-mast across council facilities, while official activities will be toned down as a mark of respect.

In a statement, the local government described the late Akran as a revered traditional ruler whose leadership fostered unity among the people and strengthened the historical identity of Badagry. Community leaders and residents were urged to observe the mourning period in accordance with tradition.

Condolence messages have continued to pour in from government officials, traditional institutions, and residents, all paying tribute to the monarch’s dedication to service and cultural preservation.

The council noted that details of burial rites and succession arrangements would be announced in due course by the appropriate traditional authorities, in line with customs of Badagry.
