Japan Warns of Avalanches as Snow Death Toll Rises to 35

Japan has issued fresh avalanche warnings as extreme snowfall continues to batter large parts of the country, with authorities confirming that at least 35 people have died in snow-related incidents this winter.

Unusually heavy snow has blanketed northern and mountainous regions, collapsing roofs, blocking roads, and cutting off rural communities. Many of the fatalities have been linked to people clearing snow from rooftops or becoming trapped by sudden snowslides, according to local officials.

Meteorological agencies warned that rising temperatures in the coming days could significantly increase the risk of avalanches, particularly in areas where deep snow has accumulated. Residents in high-risk zones have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel and to stay away from steep slopes and mountain roads.

Emergency crews remain on high alert, working to rescue stranded residents and restore access to isolated areas. Local governments have also opened temporary shelters for those displaced by the severe weather.

Japan regularly experiences heavy snowfall during winter, but experts say this season’s snowstorms have been more intense than usual, raising concerns about infrastructure damage and public safety. Authorities continue to advise caution as conditions remain unpredictable.
