Indonesia Enforces Social Media Ban for Under-16s

Jakarta — The government of Indonesia has begun enforcing a ban on social media use for children under the age of 16, citing growing concerns over online safety and mental health.

Authorities said the policy is aimed at protecting minors from risks such as cyberbullying, digital addiction, and exposure to inappropriate content, including pornography. The move forms part of broader efforts to regulate online activities and safeguard young users.

Under the new rules, social media platforms are expected to implement stricter age verification measures and restrict access for users below the specified age limit. Companies that fail to comply may face penalties from regulators.

Government officials emphasized that the policy is not intended to limit access to information but to ensure a safer digital environment for children. Parents and guardians have also been encouraged to play a more active role in monitoring their children’s online activities.

The decision has sparked mixed reactions, with some praising the initiative as necessary for child protection, while others raise concerns about enforcement challenges and potential restrictions on digital freedom.

The policy places Indonesia among a growing number of countries exploring stricter regulations on youth access to social media platforms.
