Individuals must file tax returns by March 31; employers, January 31 – Oyedele
The Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, has urged Nigerians to comply with statutory tax filing deadlines, stressing that timely submission of tax returns is essential for effective fiscal reforms and national development.
Oyedele said individuals are required by law to file their annual tax returns on or before March 31, while employers must submit theirs by January 31 each year.
He made the call while speaking on the need to strengthen tax compliance and improve government revenue without placing excessive burden on citizens.
According to him, tax compliance remains a critical pillar of ongoing fiscal reforms aimed at widening the tax net, promoting fairness, and ensuring that government has sufficient resources to fund public services and infrastructure.
Oyedele noted that failure to comply with tax laws attracts penalties and undermines the government’s efforts to build a transparent and efficient tax system. He added that the reforms being implemented are designed to simplify tax administration, reduce leakages, and restore public confidence in the use of tax revenues.
He encouraged taxpayers to take advantage of existing platforms provided by tax authorities to file their returns promptly, adding that compliance would also enable the government to better plan and deliver essential services.
The Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms was established to review Nigeria’s tax system and recommend measures that will enhance revenue generation while supporting economic growth.
