Group hails Kalu’s peace initiative for Yuletide in South East

A coalition of socio-political groups has commended the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, for his peace initiative, the Peace in the South East Project (PISE-P), saying it contributed significantly to the peaceful celebration of the Yuletide across the region.

The group, under the aegis of the South East Peace and Development Coalition, said the initiative helped to reduce tension, enhance security collaboration and promote dialogue among critical stakeholders in the zone during the festive period.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the coalition noted that the South East recorded improved socio-economic activities and free movement of people during Christmas and New Year celebrations, a development it attributed to sustained engagements championed by Kalu through the PISE-P platform.

According to the group, the peace project created an avenue for interaction between traditional rulers, youth leaders, community stakeholders and security agencies, leading to a calmer atmosphere across major cities and rural communities in the region.

“The Peace in the South East Project has proven to be a timely and strategic intervention. The relative calm witnessed during the Yuletide is a clear indication that dialogue and inclusive engagement remain the best tools for addressing security challenges,” the statement read.

The coalition also praised Kalu for what it described as his commitment to non-violent conflict resolution and regional unity, adding that his approach has rekindled hope among residents and investors in the South East.

It urged the Federal Government and other well-meaning stakeholders to support and institutionalise the PISE-P initiative to ensure sustained peace and development in the region.

The group further called on youths and community leaders to embrace the project and shun acts capable of undermining the fragile peace achieved, stressing that lasting stability is crucial for economic growth and social cohesion in the South East.

Kalu, who represents Bende Federal Constituency of Abia State, had earlier launched the PISE-P as part of efforts to address insecurity and promote peaceful coexistence through dialogue, reconciliation and community-driven solutions.
