Fire Razes Storey Commercial Building in Ikeja Computer Village
Property worth several millions of naira was destroyed in the early hours of Tuesday when a fire engulfed a one-storey commercial building on Somoye Street, Computer Village, Ikeja, Lagos State.
The inferno, which reportedly started in the early morning hours, affected several shops within the commercial building, many of which housed computer accessories, mobile phones, and other electronic gadgets. Eyewitnesses said the fire spread rapidly before emergency responders arrived at the scene.
Officials of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service later arrived and were able to bring the fire under control, preventing it from spreading to nearby buildings in the densely populated commercial area. No casualties were reported at the time of filing this report, although traders suffered heavy financial losses.
The cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed, but preliminary findings suggest it may have been linked to an electrical fault. Authorities said investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the incident.
Affected shop owners appealed to the government for assistance, lamenting that many of the goods destroyed were recently stocked. The incident has once again raised concerns about fire safety measures in crowded commercial centres like Computer Village.
Emergency officials advised traders and property owners to ensure proper electrical installations and adhere strictly to fire safety regulations to prevent future occurrences.
