FG Proposes ₦41bn to Upgrade 109 Foreign Missions
The Federal Government has proposed over ₦41 billion in the 2026 budget for the renovation, furnishing and equipping of 109 Nigerian foreign missions across the world.
The proposal, contained in the budget estimates presented to the National Assembly, is aimed at addressing the dilapidated state of diplomatic buildings, improving working conditions for staff, and enhancing Nigeria’s image abroad.
According to the budget breakdown, the funds will be used for structural rehabilitation, provision of modern office equipment, residential upgrades for diplomats, security enhancements, and general facility maintenance in embassies, high commissions and consulates.
Officials familiar with the plan said many of Nigeria’s foreign missions have suffered years of underfunding, deferred maintenance and aging infrastructure, which have negatively affected service delivery to Nigerians in the diaspora and strained diplomatic operations.
The proposed allocation is intended to restore the dignity of Nigeria’s diplomatic presence and ensure our missions function effectively in line with global standards,” a government source said.
The upgrade is also expected to improve consular services, boost staff morale, and strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic engagements, trade relations and international cooperation.
If approved by the National Assembly, implementation of the renovation programme is expected to commence in phases during the 2026 fiscal year, with priority given to missions in critical diplomatic and economic hubs.
Nigeria currently maintains over 100 foreign missions worldwide, serving as key platforms for diplomacy, trade promotion, cultural exchange and citizen services.
