FG Prioritises Infrastructure in N87.31bn Aviation Budget

The Federal Government has earmarked N87.31 billion for the aviation sector in the 2026 fiscal year, with a strong emphasis on infrastructure development and safety enhancement.

Over 80 per cent of the proposed allocation—amounting to N70.19 billion—has been set aside for capital projects, underscoring the government’s commitment to renewing critical aviation infrastructure and improving operational safety across the country’s airports and airspace.

Key areas expected to benefit from the capital expenditure include the rehabilitation and upgrade of airport runways, navigational aids, terminal facilities, and safety equipment managed by aviation agencies. The focus aligns with ongoing efforts to modernise Nigeria’s aviation ecosystem, reduce safety risks, and meet international aviation standards.

The remaining portion of the budget will cater to recurrent expenditure, including personnel costs and overheads for agencies under the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development.

Industry stakeholders have welcomed the infrastructure-heavy budgetary focus, noting that sustained investment in capital projects is essential for addressing long-standing challenges such as ageing facilities, capacity constraints, and safety concerns. They, however, stress the importance of effective implementation and timely release of funds to ensure that the budget translates into tangible improvements.

The 2026 aviation budget reflects the Federal Government’s broader strategy to strengthen transport infrastructure as a catalyst for economic growth, regional connectivity, and investor confidence in Nigeria’s aviation sector.
