Ex-Kano Deputy Governor Gawuna Defects to ADC Ahead of 2027

Former Deputy Governor of Kano State, Nasiru Gawuna, has officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), signaling a major political shift in the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Gawuna, who was the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 elections, announced his decision after weeks of speculation about his political future. His move is seen as a strategic realignment that could reshape Kano’s political landscape.

In a statement released shortly after his defection, Gawuna said his decision was driven by the need to align with a platform that reflects his vision for inclusive governance and development. He emphasized that the ADC offers a credible alternative for addressing the challenges facing Kano State and Nigeria at large.

Political observers note that Gawuna remains a significant figure in Kano politics, having served as deputy governor and built a strong support base across the state. His entry into the ADC is expected to boost the party’s visibility and competitiveness, particularly in northern Nigeria.

The development also poses a fresh challenge to the APC, which has been working to consolidate its influence in Kano following the 2023 elections. Analysts suggest that Gawuna’s defection could trigger further political movements as parties begin early positioning for 2027.

While leaders of the ADC have welcomed Gawuna into their ranks, party officials say efforts are already underway to strengthen grassroots structures and attract more high-profile entrants in the coming months.

As the political atmosphere gradually builds toward 2027, Gawuna’s move underscores the shifting alliances and growing contest for influence in one of Nigeria’s most politically significant states, Kano State.
