Democracy Thrives on Opposing Views — Secondus
Former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Uche Secondus, has called on the Nigerian government to accommodate dissenting political views, stressing that democracy flourishes through inclusiveness and tolerance.
Secondus made the remarks while expressing concerns over the treatment of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He warned that suppressing opposition voices could undermine democratic principles and weaken public confidence in governance.
According to him, political diversity and freedom of expression are essential for a healthy democracy, urging authorities to ensure fairness and respect for differing opinions.
Secondus also called for adherence to the rule of law and protection of political rights, noting that all actors must be allowed to participate freely in the democratic process.
Observers say the comments reflect growing concerns about political space and the need to safeguard democratic institutions as the country approaches another election cycle.
The development has sparked conversations around political tolerance, with stakeholders urging commitment to democratic values and peaceful engagement.
Secondus reiterated the importance of unity and dialogue in addressing national challenges and strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
