The lockdown is in respect to the directive issued by the Deji of Akure kingdom, Oba Ogunlade Aladetoyinbo to enable the town to celebrate an ancient traditional festival known as “Aheregbe”.
A statement issued by the monarch’s Chief Press Secretary, Michael Adeyeye, says the closure becomes necessary as part of the age-long tradition in observing the annual Aheregbe Festival.
He stated that during the festival, all shops and markets within Akure metropolis would be closed for businesses.
“The Palace wish to notify the residents of Akure and its environ that all Markets and Shops in Akure should remain closed on Monday 27th August 2018.
“The Palace wish to inform residents that no trading or opening of shops under any guise will be allowed.

“Residents, Market Women and shop owners are kindly enjoined to comply with this directive.”
Deji’s spokesperson, however, said that the festival will not in anyway restrict both human and vehicular movement.
Meanwhile, anyone who defies the order and opens shop for business will have his or her goods confiscated alongside other sanctions in line with tradition.
