Comparing Fela to Today’s Artistes Is Unnecessary – Femi Kuti
Femi Kuti, son of legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has described ongoing debates comparing his late father to contemporary music stars as unnecessary and misplaced.
Speaking in a recent video, the Grammy-nominated musician urged Nigerians to move away from artist rivalries and instead focus on more pressing national issues affecting the country. According to Femi, such comparisons distract from conversations that truly matter, including governance, social justice, and national development.
He noted that Fela’s music and activism were products of a specific historical and political context, making direct comparisons with today’s artistes unfair and unhelpful. Femi emphasized that every generation has its own voices and challenges, and artistes should be appreciated within their own time and circumstances.
Femi Kuti also encouraged young Nigerians to channel their energy into holding leaders accountable and engaging in discussions that can drive positive change, rather than arguing over who is greater between past and present musicians.
The comments come amid frequent social media debates pitching Fela against modern Afrobeats stars, a trend Femi believes does little to honour his father’s legacy or advance the nation’s progress.
