Commanding Officer Killed As ISWAP Fighters Attack Military Base In Borno
A commanding officer of the Nigerian Army has been killed following an attack by suspected fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) on a military base in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.
The assault reportedly occurred when heavily armed insurgents launched an offensive on the military formation, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire between the troops and the attackers.
According to counter-insurgency publication Zagazola Makama, the confrontation resulted in casualties on both sides as soldiers engaged the insurgents in a prolonged firefight.
Sources said the commanding officer died during the battle while leading troops to repel the attack. The clash also left several insurgents neutralised, although the exact number of casualties has yet to be officially confirmed.
Security sources noted that reinforcement teams were later deployed to the area to stabilise the situation and prevent further attacks.
Kukawa and surrounding communities in the Lake Chad region have continued to witness intermittent attacks by insurgent groups despite ongoing military operations aimed at restoring peace and security in the area.
