BREAKING: Electoral Act: Senate Appoints 12-Member Committee to Work With Reps
The Nigerian Senate has constituted a 12-member committee to collaborate with the House of Representatives on the proposed amendment of the Electoral Act.
The committee was announced on the floor of the Red Chamber on Tuesday by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, as part of efforts to harmonise legislative inputs ahead of electoral reforms.
According to Akpabio, the move is aimed at ensuring a comprehensive review of the Electoral Act to address emerging challenges from previous elections and to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic process.
The Senate committee will work jointly with its counterpart in the House of Representatives to fine-tune proposed amendments, align positions, and fast-track legislative action on key electoral issues.
Although the full list of committee members was not immediately disclosed, the Senate President noted that the selection reflects broad representation and relevant legislative experience.
The amendment process is expected to focus on critical areas such as election conduct, electoral technology, dispute resolution, and timelines for polls, among others.
The development signals renewed legislative momentum toward electoral reforms ahead of future general elections.
