Borno Constable Returns ₦2.6m Sent in Error to Counter Negative Police Image — PPRO

A police constable in Borno State, Alhaji Muhammad, has returned the sum of ₦2.6 million that was mistakenly transferred to his bank account, in what the Nigeria Police Force described as a deliberate act to counter negative perceptions about the institution.

The Borno State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) disclosed this in a statement, praising the constable for his honesty and professionalism.

According to the police, the money was accidentally sent to the officer by an unknown sender. Upon discovering the error, Constable Muhammad reportedly alerted his superiors and took immediate steps to ensure the full amount was returned to the rightful owner.

The constable was quoted as saying that his action was motivated by a desire to prove that many officers within the force remain disciplined, trustworthy, and committed to ethical conduct despite widespread public criticism of the police.

“I did it to show that not all police officers are corrupt,” he said.

The PPRO noted that the officer’s conduct aligns with the core values of the Nigeria Police Force and serves as an example of integrity for other personnel.

He added that the command would formally commend the constable for his honesty, stressing that such actions help rebuild public trust and confidence in law enforcement.

The development has drawn praise from members of the public, who described the gesture as commendable and a reminder that integrity still exists within the police force.
