Are YORUBA movies not part of NOLLYWOOD? – Mercy Aigbe asks after THISDAY Style mag snub
3 min readIt’s another Sunday! Nigeria’s ThisDay Style magazine, which featured bread-seller-turned-model Olajumoke on its ‘most popular cover’ in February, chose to present Nollywood’s best dressed at the 2016 AMVCAs.
Sharing the cover of the new issue on IG, they wrote: ‘Tag your favourite Nollywood celebrity.’
Though MERCY AIGBE didn’t win any awards at event on Saturday March 5 at the Eko Hotel and Suites, she was crowned ‘best dressed’ by many fans and fashionistas BUT she’s nowhere to be found on the cover. Neither were stylishly dressed Toyin Aimakhu and Funke Akindele.

‘I read pple’s comments asking why Mercy isn’t on the cover and at first I wanted to waka pass, but on a second thought I decided to talk about it, cos it’s been an issue dat has lingered for too long!…….I thought to myself why didn’t Mercy make the cover of @thisdaystyle best dressed list?…. Has @thisdaystyle ever featured a yoruba actor on their cover?………are yoruba movies not part of nollywood? …..is Nollywood not supposed to mean home grown Nigerian movies? …..hmmmmm I am very sure they didn’t coz, they won’t want to STAIN their cover with a ‘RAZZ’ ‘LOCAL’ yoruba actor!….Yes I am razz, Yes I am local and Yes I am a Yoruba actor!…..No I refuse to speak ur almighty English with fake British or American accent!….Because I’ll always remain true to myself!…I am ME ….Proud Benin Woman, Proud Ijesha’s wife and above all proud Nigerian.’
Meanwhile, that was not the only complaint about the cover, as @brownseyifunmi also stated: ‘Omotola {Jalade-Ekeinde} and OC {Ukeje} didn’t attend oh…this is rubbish…’
Truth be told, the two Nollywood stars were ABSENT at the event, BUT they also made the cover.
Let’s know what you think: did Mercy Aigbe react well or she took it too far?
