Anambra Assembly Seeks CCTV Installation in Public Hospitals
Lawmakers in the Anambra State House of Assembly have passed a resolution calling for the installation of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras in public hospitals across Anambra State as part of efforts to curb medical negligence, improve patient care, and rebuild public confidence in government-owned health facilities.
The resolution, adopted during plenary, urged the state Ministry of Health and relevant agencies to commence the phased deployment of surveillance systems in general hospitals and other public health institutions.
According to the lawmakers, the move is aimed at enhancing transparency and accountability in the healthcare system. They noted that the presence of CCTV cameras would help monitor service delivery, discourage unprofessional conduct, and provide evidence in cases of alleged negligence or misconduct.
A member who moved the motion said the initiative would serve as a preventive mechanism against avoidable medical errors and unethical practices, while also protecting healthcare workers from false accusations.
“The installation of CCTV in our public hospitals will not only improve discipline among staff but also assure patients and their families that proper procedures are being followed,” the lawmaker stated during debate.
The Assembly further emphasized that surveillance footage could assist in resolving disputes, investigating complaints, and strengthening administrative oversight within health facilities. Lawmakers also recommended that data protection measures be strictly observed to safeguard patient privacy and confidentiality.
Health sector stakeholders have expressed mixed reactions to the proposal. While some described it as a progressive step toward strengthening institutional accountability, others stressed the need for complementary reforms such as improved funding, better remuneration for medical personnel, and upgraded medical equipment.
If implemented, the policy is expected to form part of broader health sector reforms by the Anambra State Government aimed at enhancing service delivery and restoring public trust in state-owned hospitals.
