AFCON 2025: Salah Downplays Egypt as Favourites

Egypt captain Mohamed Salah has dismissed suggestions that the Pharaohs are favourites to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), insisting the team is focused on taking the tournament one game at a time.

Speaking ahead of the competition, the Liverpool forward said past achievements and reputation would not guarantee success, stressing that AFCON is always unpredictable and highly competitive.

“There are no favourites in AFCON,” Salah said. “Every team comes prepared and hungry. We are not thinking about titles now; we are focused on each match as it comes.”

Egypt, record winners of the tournament, are often tipped as strong contenders whenever AFCON approaches. However, Salah cautioned against complacency, noting that several African teams have improved significantly in recent years.

The 31-year-old added that the team’s priority is collective effort and discipline rather than individual brilliance, emphasizing that success would depend on teamwork and consistency throughout the tournament.

Egypt will be aiming to reclaim continental glory at AFCON 2025 after mixed performances in recent editions, with Salah expected to play a key leadership role as the Pharaohs begin their campaign.
