AFCON 2019: Super Eagles Finish In Third Place, Extend Record
1 min readNigeria defeated Tunisia 1-0 in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations third-place playoff on Wednesday night.
The Super Eagles missed the chance to play in the final, after they were beaten 2-1 by Algeria, with Riyad Mahrez smashing in the winner with the last kick.
However, Odion Ighalo’s early goal, ensured Gernot Rohr’s men clinched bronze medal.
The victory means Nigeria have never lost a third-place fixture in the history of the AFCON, winning all eight they have featured in.
Nigeria remain the country with the most third-place wins at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Odion Ighalo, who now has five goals at the tournament, netted the winner in the third minute.
The three-time champions had already won bronze seven times before, three more than Ivory Coast in second place with four.
