PHARMACISTS URGED TO LEAD HIV PREVENTION, RESEARCH

Health researchers have called on pharmacists in Nigeria to take a more active role in HIV prevention, testing, treatment support and research, citing their accessibility and professional expertise.
The researchers said pharmacists are often among the most accessible healthcare professionals, particularly for people who may be reluctant to visit hospitals or specialised health facilities for HIV-related services.
They urged pharmacists to expand their involvement in HIV testing and prevention programmes, including providing accurate information, counselling and referrals for people who require further medical care.
The researchers also emphasised the importance of pharmacists contributing to HIV-related research. They said evidence generated from community pharmacies could help identify emerging challenges and improve strategies for reaching people at risk of HIV.
According to the experts, stronger collaboration between pharmacists, doctors, public health institutions and other healthcare professionals would help create a more coordinated response to HIV in Nigeria.
They therefore called for greater investment in training and capacity-building for pharmacists, saying their wider participation could help expand access to prevention and testing services while supporting Nigeria’s broader efforts to reduce the impact of HIV.
