NIMC Database Helped Arrest Seven Boko Haram, ISWAP Commanders Returning from Hajj — Minister
The Federal Government has disclosed that the integration of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) database played a key role in the arrest of seven suspected Boko Haram and ISWAP commanders who were returning to Nigeria from the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage.
The Minister responsible for the identity management system said the arrests were made possible through enhanced biometric verification and intelligence sharing among relevant security agencies, demonstrating the effectiveness of Nigeria’s digital identity infrastructure in strengthening national security.
According to the minister, the suspects were identified during routine screening at points of entry after their identity records were matched through the NIMC database, leading to their immediate apprehension by security operatives.
He noted that the development underscores the importance of integrating national identity data with security operations to detect criminal elements, prevent terrorism, and improve border security.
The minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to expanding the use of the National Identification Number (NIN) database across critical sectors, saying the initiative would continue to support law enforcement agencies in combating terrorism, organised crime, identity fraud, and other security threats.
Security agencies are expected to continue investigations into the suspects as authorities intensify efforts to dismantle terrorist networks and enhance the country’s overall security architecture.
