State Police: Ex-Lawmaker Commends Tinubu, Dismisses Fears of Abuse

Abuja, Nigeria – Former lawmaker, Senator Ayodele Arise, has praised President Bola Tinubu and the National Assembly for the passage of the State Police Bill, describing it as a major step toward addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.

Arise dismissed concerns that state police could be abused by governors and political actors, arguing that adequate legal safeguards and oversight mechanisms can prevent misuse of the system.

According to the former senator, the establishment of state police will strengthen grassroots security, improve intelligence gathering, and enable faster responses to local threats across the country.

He noted that the current centralized policing structure has struggled to effectively tackle rising insecurity in many parts of Nigeria, making decentralization a necessary reform.

Arise commended lawmakers for supporting the legislation and expressed confidence that state police would enhance collaboration between federal and state security agencies.

He urged stakeholders to focus on developing a transparent operational framework that ensures accountability while maximizing the benefits of community-based policing.

The former lawmaker maintained that the reform has the potential to significantly improve public safety and contribute to national stability if properly implemented.
