SERAP Urges FG to Release Sowore, Drop Charges

Abuja – The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on the Federal Government to immediately release activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore and withdraw all charges filed against him.

In a statement, SERAP expressed concern over Sowore’s detention and prosecution, arguing that the case raises important issues relating to freedom of expression, civic participation, and the rule of law.

The organization urged authorities to respect constitutional rights and Nigeria’s international human rights obligations, stressing that citizens should be free to express their opinions without fear of intimidation or persecution.

SERAP maintained that democratic governance thrives when individuals are allowed to criticize public institutions and hold leaders accountable through lawful means.

The call follows recent legal proceedings involving Sowore, whose case has attracted widespread attention from civil society groups, political observers, and human rights advocates.

Supporters of the activist have described the charges as an attempt to suppress dissent, while government authorities insist that all actions taken are in accordance with the law and due process.

SERAP further urged the government to demonstrate its commitment to justice and democratic principles by ensuring that fundamental rights are protected and respected at all times.

The organization called on relevant authorities to review the matter urgently and take steps toward resolving the case in a manner consistent with constitutional and international legal standards.

The latest appeal adds to growing public debate surrounding freedom of speech, civil liberties, and the relationship between government institutions and civic activists in Nigeria.
