Traditional Ruler, Wife, Son Killed in Fresh Benue Attack

Gunmen have killed a traditional ruler, his wife, and their son in a fresh attack on the Olegabulu community in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State.

The victims were identified as Chief Momo Awodi, the community’s traditional ruler, his wife Abigail, and their son. The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday night when armed assailants invaded the area, opening fire on residents.

Local sources said the attackers struck suddenly, leaving little room for escape as they targeted the monarch’s residence. The killing has thrown the community into mourning and heightened fears among residents, many of whom have fled to safer locations.

Community leaders condemned the attack, describing it as another tragic episode in the recurring violence affecting parts of Agatu and surrounding areas. They called on security agencies to intensify efforts to protect lives and property, and to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Security officials have yet to release full details of the incident, but authorities are said to have deployed personnel to the area to restore calm and prevent further violence.

The latest attack adds to a series of deadly incidents in Benue State, where clashes and armed assaults have continued to threaten rural communities. Observers say urgent and sustained intervention is needed to address the root causes of the violence and ensure lasting peace in the region.
