Lagos Urban Development Fuels Electrical Fire Risk Concerns — Expert

Lagos, Nigeria – Rapid urban development and increasing demand for electricity in Lagos are heightening the risk of electrical fires, according to a safety expert who has called for stronger integration of fire protection measures in building and infrastructure projects.
Speaking on the growing concerns, the expert from Schneider Electric noted that the expansion of residential, commercial, and industrial developments across the state has increased pressure on electrical systems, making fire safety a critical consideration in modern construction.
The expert stressed that electrical fire prevention should be incorporated into the design and installation stages of electrical systems rather than treated as an afterthought. According to him, proper planning, quality equipment, regular maintenance, and compliance with safety standards are essential to reducing fire incidents.
He warned that overloaded circuits, faulty wiring, and aging electrical infrastructure remain major causes of electrical fires, particularly in densely populated urban areas experiencing rapid growth.
The expert also urged developers, engineers, regulators, and property owners to adopt integrated safety solutions capable of detecting and preventing electrical faults before they escalate into emergencies.
As Lagos continues to expand as Nigeria’s commercial hub, stakeholders have been encouraged to prioritize electrical safety in order to protect lives, property, and investments while supporting sustainable urban development.
The call comes amid increasing concerns over fire outbreaks linked to electrical faults in various parts of the state, highlighting the need for proactive measures to address emerging risks.
