Indian Activist Hospitalised After 20-Day Hunger Strike

Indian activist Sonam Wangchuk has been admitted to a hospital after completing a 20-day hunger strike launched to protest aspects of India’s examination and education system.
Wangchuk, an engineer, education reformer and environmental campaigner, began the hunger strike to draw attention to his concerns over educational policies and the need for reforms that promote fairness, transparency and equal opportunities for students.
According to reports, his health deteriorated after nearly three weeks without food, prompting doctors to recommend immediate medical care. He was subsequently transferred to a hospital for close monitoring and treatment.
Supporters of the activist gathered to express solidarity, calling on the authorities to engage in dialogue and address the issues raised during the protest. They urged the government to consider reforms that would strengthen the country’s education system.
Wangchuk has gained international recognition for his work in education and sustainable development, particularly in India’s Himalayan region, where he has championed innovative learning methods and environmental conservation.
The hunger strike has renewed public debate over education policies in India, with many stakeholders calling for constructive discussions between government officials, educators and civil society groups to resolve the concerns raised.
Authorities have yet to issue a detailed response to the demands, while medical personnel continue to monitor Wangchuk’s condition as he recovers in hospital.
