UK May Deport Thousands of Nigerians Under New Migration Deal

The United Kingdom and Nigeria have signed a new bilateral agreement designed to strengthen migration control and accelerate the return of Nigerian nationals with no lawful right to remain in the UK. The deal was formalised during Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s state visit to the UK, with Nigeria’s Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji‑Ojo and UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood signing the arrangement.

According to official statements, the agreement will enable the UK government to deport over 2,000 Nigerians, including failed asylum seekers, visa overstayers and convicted foreign national offenders who have exhausted legal avenues to stay in the country.

A notable provision in the deal allows Nigeria to accept “UK letters” — alternative identification documents issued by UK authorities to individuals without valid passports. This marks the first time such documents will be recognised for travel purposes, removing a key bureaucratic hurdle that previously slowed down deportations.

UK officials have framed the agreement as part of a broader effort to tighten border security and crack down on irregular migration, saying it will make removals more efficient and help deter illegal entry and overstaying.

While the UK government says the deal reflects strong migration enforcement cooperation, details on the implementation timeline, financial terms, and whether deportations will be limited solely to Nigerian nationals have not been disclosed.

Nigeria’s interior minister said the agreement underscores the country’s willingness to fulfil its international obligations and contribute to responsible migration management, although the move has sparked debate over its potential social and humanitarian impacts.
